National guidance from the DfES (Sex and Relationship Education Guidance, published in July 2000) advises that all Schools and Academies should deliver Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) to young people through their physical, emotional and moral development.
Formal SRE will be taught through your child’s compulsory Science lessons and we also deliver SRE during PSHE / Life Skills lessons.
Abbeyfield School is now required to provide parents with notice “where courses of study, educational programs or instructional materials, or instruction or exercise include subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with sexual education, human sexuality or sexual orientation”.
The program aims to enable students to make well informed, healthy choices and to develop behaviours that contribute to the well-being of themselves and others. Three general outcomes serve as the foundation for SRE. These are wellness choices, relationship choices and life-long learning choices.
The SRE units will continue throughout the academic year – depending on what Year Group your child is in will depend on when it will be studied.
If you do not wish for your child to participate in the SRE lessons please inform the School in writing.
